Where there is am appreciable debris in the flow the clearance on the top invert steel shall be increased 1/2 inch for velocities greater than 5 fps. That portion of the steel clearance greater than 3 inches in the invert shall be considered as sacrificial and shall not be used in the design of the steel i n the opposite face. The concrete mix shown in the above "' table applies to the invert only and shall be shown on the plans. Debris MO `in the fi may require a richer concrete mix. This will be determined by the Materials Section of the Contract Administration Division. The hydrology calculations are for existing, interim and ultimate conditions. For the interim condition it is recommended, by Rivertech, that the ultimate Hawker - Crawford Channel be constructed concurrently with the Hunter's Ridge development. It is also recommended to construct a 10 -foot notch at the entrance to the ultimate Hawker- ,' Crawford Channel from Rich Basin. For the ultimate development condition Rich Basin will be in its ultimate configuration and the 10 -foot notch will be removed. The ultimate Hawker - Crawford Channel is recommended to be a rectangular concrete channel with a 14 -foot bottom width. The calculations submitted are thorough, easy to follow and meet our approval. Plans provided to our office indicate a rectangular channel, with vertical walls to eighteen feet in height, is pro- posed. Portions of the new channel floor are to be slightly above the existing channel floor and portions are to be approximately five "M; feet below the existing channel floor. We have been informed that the current design may require as much as 4000 PSF allowable bearing (for that portion of the channel that has the highest sidewalis), whereas 2000 PSF allowable bearing would suffice for that portion of the channel where the sidewalis are lower. Although the existing soils are anticipated to be too compressible to allow these capacities without undue settlement, grading or other solutions may be utilized to achieve the desired capacities, with differential settlement (measured across the half- " width of the channel or per fifty foot length along the channel) being limited to one inch. r ULULi w.. ii A. . ii First City Properties • - October 4, 1988 W.O. 7526 il As discussed with the project engineer, we are completing our analysis of the required settlement mitigating measures, the results of which will be provided at a later date. It was agreed that allowable bearing capacities of 2000 PSF, 2500 PSF and 4000 PSF would be used for channel sidewalls to 9.5 il feet, 9.5+ to 12.5, and 12.5+ to 18 feet, respectively. We wish to advise you that corrective measures to achieve the requested bearing II may require significant effort (and cost). We have discussed an II alternative design, whereby the footing which presently extends the minimum allowable distance behind the vertical wall be extended II further so as to increase the bearing area and reduce the maximum loading. This is to be evaluated by the project engineer. The geotechnical engineer has prepared this report in accor- dance with generally accepted engineering practices at this time and location, and makes no other warranties as to the professional II advice provided under the terms of the agreement and included in this report.
