III. MATERIALS
(A) PLANTS
1) IDENTIFICATION - PLANTS SHALL BE THE
VARIETY AND SIZE SHOWN ON THE PLANS AND
SHALL CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS
HEREIN, ONE OF EACH BUNDLE OR LOT SHALL
BE TAGGED WITH PLANT NAME IN ACCORDANCE
WITH RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE AMERICAN
ASSOCIATION OF NURSERYMEN,
2) SUBSTITUTION - SUBSTITUTIONS FOR THE
INDICATED PLANT MATERIALS WILL BE
PERMITTED, PROVIDED THE SUBSTITUTE
MATERIALS ARE APPROVED IN ADVANCE BY
THE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT AND THE
SUBSTITUTIONS ARE MADE AT NO ADDITIONAL
COST. EXCEPT FOR THE VARIATIONS SO
AUTHORIZED, ALL SUBSTITUTE PLANT
MATERIAL SHALL CONFORM TO THE
REQUIREMENTS OF THESE SPECIFICATIONS. IF
ACCEPTED SUBSTITUTE MATERIALS ARE OF
LESS VALUE THAN THOSE INDICATED OR
SPECIFIED, THE CONTRACT PRICE WILL BE
ADJUSTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE
PROVISIONS OF THE CONTRACT.
3) QUALITY AND SIZE - ALL PLANTS SHALL HAVE
A HABIT OF GROWTH THAT IS NORMAL TO THE
SPECIES, BE SOUND, HEALTHY, VIGOROUS AND
FREE FROM INSECT PESTS, PLANT DISEASES,
SUN SCALDS, FRESH ABRASIONS OF THE BARK,
EXCESSIVE ABRASIONS OR OTHER
OBJECTIONABLE DISFIGUREMENTS. TREE
—. TRUNKS SHALL BE STURDY AND WELL
"HARDENED OFF". THE PLANTS SHALL HAVE
NORMALLY WELL DEVELOPED BRANCH SYSTEMS
AND VIGOROUS AND FIBROUS ROOT SYSTEMS
WHICH ARE NOT ROOT OR POT BOUND.
PLANTS SHALL BE GROWN IN NURSERIES WHICH
HAVE BEEN INSPECTED BY THE STATE

4) REJECTION - THE OWNER AND/OR LANDSCAPE
ARCHITETT SHALL HAVE THE RIGHT TO
REJECT PLANTS WHICH DO NOT MEET THE
SPECIFIED CONDITIONS OR ACCEPTED
STANDARDS OF THE TRADE.
(B) COMMERCIAL FERTILIZER
1) PELLETIZED FORM FOR SOIL PREPARATION
SHALL BE COMMERCIAL FERTILIZER HAVING A
10-10-10 FORMULA. FERTILIZERS SHALL
BE UNIFORM IN COMPOSITION, DRY AND
FREE-FLOWING, DELIVERED TO THE SITE IN
THE ORIGINAL, UNOPENED CONTAINERS, EACH
BEARING THE -MAN UFACTURER'S GUARANTEED
ANALYSIS. ANY FERTILIZER WHICH BECOMES

IV. GRADING
