GENERAL PLANTING
A. GENERAL
1. Contractor shall provide all labor, materials and equipment for the instoibtion of
plant material as indicated on the drawings and as specified herein.
2. Contractor shag coordinate planting with other site improvements. Unless otherwise
specified, structural improvements shoo be installed prior to planting operations.
3. Contractor shall be responsible for locating and staking existing sewer, water and
utility liras above or below grade that migh! be damaged as a result of planting
operations. Contractor shall assume sole responsibility for any cost incurred due to
damage and for replacement of aforementioned utilities.
4. AN work on the irrit"tion system, including hydrostatic, coverage, and operational

tests and the bochfilli and compaction of trenches shall be performed prior to
planting operations.
5. Samples of fertilizers, soil conditioners, seed, or other materials shag be submitted
to Owner forty-eight (48) hours prior to incorporation in the work.
6. An agricultural suitobility and fertility onalysis soils report shall take precedence over
these specificotions.
S. PLANT MATERIAL QUALITY
1. Plant material shall be in accordance with the State Depjlrtment of Agriculture's
ulations for nurse inspections, rules and grading. All plants shall be of No. 1
Grade and have a norma habit of growth, and shall be sound, health vi
vigorous
and free of insect infestations, plant diseases, ;un scolds, fresh bark abrasions or
a
other objectionable disfigurements All plants shall hove a normal, welWeveloped
branch system and vigorous and fibrous root system which is not root bound and is
free of kinked or girdling roots.
2. Nursery growth stock shall be selected from high quality, well-shoped stock, grown
under climatic conditions similar to those in the project locale. Minimum acceptable
size of loots as indicated in the drawings shall correspond with that normally
ex,
the species and variety of commerciolly available nursery stock.
3 . Where applicable, caliper shall be the diameter of the trunk one foot (V) above the
ground surface.
4. Oversize plants may be used if not root bound, but shall not increase the Contract
�.- price. Up to ten percent (10%) of undersized plants in any one (1) variety and
grade may be used; provided they are larger than the overage size of the next
smallest grade.
5. Scientific and common names conform to customary nursery usage.

7. The Owner reserves the right to refuse or reject any unsuitable plant material.

8. Pruning of plant materials shall not be done prior to delivery. Aber planting,

1. Fertilizers shall comply with applicable requirements of the State Agriculturo) Code

D. AMENDMENTS
1. Nitrogen stabilized organic amendment shall be a ground or processed wood
product derived from wood of redwood, fir or cedar, treated with a nontoxic agent
■ to absorb water quickly. Nitrogen content, based on dry weight, shall be 0.5% for
redwood and OTO°%D for fir ond cedar. Iron content loosed on dry weight, shall be
p.1 %. Pine sawdust is not acceptable.

E. T PSOI l
1 Topsoil shall consist of ferule, friable soil of loamy character, and shall contain an
amount of organic matter normal to the area. It shall be reosonably free from
weeds, refuse, rocas, heavy or stiff cloy, stones larger than one inch (1 ") in diameter,
sticks, brush, jitter and other deleterious substances. Topsoil may be obtoined from
the site if approved by the Owner.
2. When required, imported topsoil shall be subject to inspection and testing at the
source of supply prior to delivery to the project.
F. MATERIAL DELIVERY AND INSPECTION
1. Plant material shall be delivered with legible identification labels, handled and
stored adequately to maintain a healthy condition, protecting them from drying out,
windburn or any other injury.
2. Inspection of plant materials required by City, County, State or Federal authorities
shall be the responsibility of the Contractor. When requested, Controctw shoo
furnish copies of such permits or certificates to Owner.

planted and shall be guaranteed for one (1) full year from the dote of replanting.
3. Cost incurred due to replacement of dead or dying plant material shall be the
responsibility of the Contractor.
PLANTING - SODDED TURF
A. GENERAL
This section is supplemental to the General Planting Section. Where applicable, planting
shall be in accordance with conditions thereon.
B PLANT MATERIAL QUALITY
1 . Sod shall be grown from high quality propagative moteriol, free from weeds,
diseases, ond insects, and sholl be in accordance with the standards for regulation
for nursery inspection of the applicable State of the protect.
2 Sod shall be machine cut at o uniform thickness of five-eighths of an inch (5/8")

in a smooth and uniform condition.
2. Finish grade for turf areas shall be one inch (1 ") below the finish surface of walks,
curbs, or related hardscope.
3. Prior to sodding, soil shall be moist to a minimum depth of one inch (1
