CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS
1" SCOPE OF WORK
FURNISH MATERIALS AND PERFORM LABOR REQUIRED TO EXECUTE THE WORK
AS INDICATED IN THE DRAWINGS, AS SPECIFIED HEREIN AND AS NECESSARY
TO COMPLETE THE CONTRACT.
2. GENERAL CONDITIONS
2.1 PERFORM WORK IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALL APPLICABLE LAWS, CODES
AND REGULATIONS REQUIRED BY AUTHORITIES HAVING JURISDICTION
OVER SUCH WORK AND PROVIDE FOR ALL INSPECTIONS AND PERMITS
REQUIRED BY FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN
FURNISHING, TRANSPORTING AND INSTALLING MATERIALS. IT SHALL
BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR TO CONTACT THE ABOVE
MENTIONED AUTHORITIES TO ENSURE ALL REQUIREMENTS ARE MET.
2.2 CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING HIMSELF FAMILIAR
WITH ALL UNDERGROUND UTILITIES, PIPES AND STRUCTURES.
CONTRACTOR SHALL TAKE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY COST
INCURRED DUE TO DAMAGE OF SAID FACILITIES.
2.3 DO NOT WILLFULLY PROCEED WITH CONSTRUCTION AS DESIGNED WHEN
IT IS OBVIOUS THAT UNKNOWN OBSTRUCTIONS AND/OR GRADE
DIFFERENCES EXIST THAT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN KNOWN DURING DESIGN.
_ SUCH CONDITIONS SHALL BE IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT TO -THE ATTENTION
OF THE OWNER'S AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE. THE CONTRACTOR
SHALL ASSUME FULL RESPONS-IBILITY FOR ALL NECESSARY REVISIONS
DUE TO FAILURE TO GIVE SUCH NOTIFICATION.
2.4 COORDINATE INSTALLATION OF ALL WORK TO AVOID INTERFERENCE AND
CONFLICT WITH UTILITIES AND OTHER CONSTRUCTION.
2.5 KEEP THE PREMISES CLEAN AND FREE OF EXCESS EQUIPMENT,
MATERIALS AND DEBRIS INCIDENTAL TO WORK.
2.6 PROTECT WORK AND WORK OF OTHERS AT ALL TIMES IN PERFORMANCE
OF WORK.
2.7 IT SHALL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR TO, OBTAIN
AND PAY FOR ALL LICENSE, PERMITS, AND BONDS REQUIRED FOR THE
EXECUTION OF THIS WORK.
3. MATERIAL
3.1 GENERAL: PROVIDE MATERIALS OF BEST QUALITY OBTAINABLE, WHICH
COMPLY STRICTLY WITHDRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS.
3.2 CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS: SMOOTH FACE, HOLLOW CONCRETE MASONRY
UNITS, ASTM C90-70, GRADE III. INTERLOCKING MR50NRY UK1175 MAY 66 USED.
3.3 TILE: 6" X 6" MODULAR TITLE AS SELECTED BY OWNER.
3.4 CEMENT: FOR MORTAR AND GROUT: TYPE I OR II PORTLAND CEMENT
CONFORMING TO ASTM SPEC. C-150. TYPE II PORTLAND CEMENT MAY
BE USED ONLY IF IT EQUALS STRENGTH OF TYPE I. ALL CEMENT
USED (MORTAR AND GROUT) SHALL BE LOW ALKAI TYPE (6o MAXIMUM).
3.5 SAND. SAND FOR MORTAR SHALL CONFORM TO ASTEM C144, EXCEPT
THAT NOT LESS THAN 3% OF AND SHALL PASS 0100 SIEVE. SAND FOR
GROUT SHALL CONFORM TO ASTM C404.
3.6 PEA GRAVEL: CONFORMING TO ASTM C-33. SIZE RANGE NO. 8 TO
3/811. FOR ALL WASHED AGGREGATE SURFACES.
3.7 CONCRETE: ALL CONCRETE SHALL BE TRANSIT -MIX TYPE, CONFORMING
TO ASTM C-94. CONCRETE 411X- SHALL BE 2000 P . S . I . AMOUNT OF
WATER PER SACK OF CEMENT SHALL.NOT EXCEED 7.5 GALLONS. SLUMP
SHALL BE 3" TO 411.- WATER SHALL --BE .FROM POTABLE SOURCE.
3.8 MORTAR AND GROUT MIXES:
A. MORTAR PROPORTIONS: 1 PART PORTLAND CEMENT, 1/4 TO 1/2
PART LIME PUTTY OR HYDRATED LIME AND 4 PARTS MORTAR SAND.
B. GROUT PROPORTIONS: 1 PART CEMENT, 3 PARTS CONCRETE SAND,
1 TO 2 PARTS PEA GRAVEL MAY BE ADDED FOR WIDE GROUT
SPACES. SUFFICIENTLY FLUID TO INSURE FILLING CORE, BUT
NOT SO THIN AS TO PERMIT SEGREGATION DURING POURING.
MEASUREMENTS BASED ON DRY LOOSE VOLUME.
C. MIXING: ACCURATELY MEASURE MATERIALS FOR MORTAR AND
GROUT. PLACE SAND, CEMENT AND WATER, IN THAT ORDER, IN
MIXER AND MIX FOR AT LEAST TWO MINUTES. FOR MORTAR, ADD
LIME AND CONTINUE MIXING FOR AT LEAST 10 MORE MINUTES OR
AS MUCH LONGER AS REQUIRED TO SECURE A UNIFORM MASS.
RETEMPER MORTAR CAREFULLY IN. REMOVE FROM WORK ANY
MORTARY OR GROUT WHICH IS UNUSED WITHIN 1 HOUR AFTER
4. EARTHWORK
4.1 GENERAL: FURNISH MATERIALS AND PERFORM LABOR REQUIRED TO
EXECUTE THIS WORK AS INDICATED ON THE DRAWINGS, AS SPECIFIED
AND AS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE CONTRACT.
4.2 FINAL GRADES AND ELEVATIONS:
A. GRADES INDICATED ARE FINISH GRADES UNLESS OTHERWISE
SHOWN.
B. THE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT SHALL HAVE FINAL APPROVAL OF ALL
GRADING PROCEDURES AND GRADES.
C. FILL AREAS UNDER PAVING OR OTHER STRUCTURES SHALL BE
COMPACTED TO NINETY PERCENT RELATIVE COMPACTION.
D. THE ENTIRE FINISHED AREA SHALL BE GRADED TO A SMOOTH,
WELLDRAINED SURFACE TO MEET,'WITHIN A TOLERANCE -OF PLUS
OR MINUS 0.10 FEET, THE GRADES AS REQUIRED BY PLAN, AND
GRADES TO AN EVEN SLOPE BETWEEN NEW ELEVATIONS AND
EXISTING GRADES AT LIMITS OF GRADING OPERATIONS.
4.3 IMBALANCE OF -MATERIAL: ALL'EXCAVATED MATERIAL UNSUITABLE FOR
FILL, INCLUDING ROCKS OVER 1" DIAMETER, AND ANY EXCESS CUT
MATERIAL SHALL BE REMOVED BY THE CONTRACTOR AND PLACED IN
PROPER SITE AS DIRECTED BY OWNER.
5. CONCRETE WORK
5.1 GENERAL: PERFORM ALL WORK IN ACCORD WITH THE BEST STANDARD
PRACTICE. DO NOT WILLFULLY INSTALL WORK WHEN THERE IS AN
APPARENT CONFLICT.
5.2 AGGREGATE BASE: COMPACT TO A HARD, FIRM, UNYIELDING SURFACE
THAT WILL REMAIN STABLE WHEN SATURATED WITH WATER.
5.3 PREPARATION:
A. BASE COURSE: SUBGRADE SHALL BE SMOOTH, TRUE TO LINE AND
GRADE, AND TESTED FOR REQUIRED COMPACTION PRIOR TO START
OF PLACING CONCRETE. DAMPEN SUBGRADE 24 HOURS BEFORE
PLACING. RE -ROLL AS REQUIRED. WET FORMS TO TIGHTEN
CRACKS.
B. REINFORCING STEEL: BEFORE PLACING, THOROUGHLY CLEAN,
REINFORCING OF LOOSE'MILL SCALE, RUST, OIL OR OTHER
COATING THAT MIGHT DESTROY OR REDUCE BOND. POSITION AS
INDICATED, SECURE STEEL AGAINST DISPLACEMENT. USE
CONCRETE BLOCKS TO HOLD REINFORCEMENT IN PROPER
POSITION.
C. FOOTING: STAKE RIGIDLY AT 4 FEET O.C. AND SECURE
AGAINST DISPLACEMENT. INSTALL STRETCHED WIRES OR OTHER
DEVICES TO AVOID DISPLACEMENT. FORMWORK SHALL NOT
DEVIATE MORE THAN 1/8" FROM REQUIRED POSITIONS AND
LEVELS.
D. FOOTINGS: FOOTINGS FOR MASONRY WALLS SHALL BE DUG TO
DEPTH AND WIDTH AS DETAILED IN THE PLANS HAVING VERTICAL
SLIDES AND FLAT BOTTOM.
5.4 PLACING CONCRETE: PLACE CONCRETE WITHIN 60 MINUTES AFTER
MIXING. CONSOLIDATE BY VIBRATING AND/OR TAMPING.
5.5 CONTROL JOINTS: SHALL CONFROM TO CITY OF FONTANA STANDARD DETAIL
105-A.
5.6 EXPANSION JOINTS: SHALL CONFORM TO CITY OF FONTANA STANDARD
DETAIL 105-A.
5.7 FINISH: ALL CONCRETE FLAT WORK SHALL RECEIVE MEDIUM BROOM

5.8 CURING: APPLY CURING PAPER OR LIQUID CURING COMPOUND AS SOON

5.9 GUARANTEE: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL GUARANTEE THAT ALL CONCRETE

OF ONE YEAR FROM DATE OF ACCEPTANCE OF WORK. CRACKED PAVING

4. EARTHWORK
4.1 GENERAL: FURNISH MATERIALS AND PERFORM LABOR REQUIRED TO
EXECUTE THIS WORK AS INDICATED ON THE DRAWINGS, AS SPECIFIED
AND AS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE CONTRACT.
4.2 FINAL GRADES AND ELEVATIONS:
A. GRADES INDICATED ARE FINISH GRADES UNLESS OTHERWISE
SHOWN.
B. THE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT SHALL HAVE FINAL APPROVAL OF ALL
GRADING PROCEDURES AND GRADES.
C. FILL AREAS UNDER PAVING OR OTHER STRUCTURES SHALL BE
COMPACTED TO NINETY PERCENT RELATIVE COMPACTION.
D. THE ENTIRE FINISHED AREA SHALL BE GRADED TO A SMOOTH,

4.3 IMBALANCE OF -MATERIAL: ALL'EXCAVATED MATERIAL UNSUITABLE FOR
FILL, INCLUDING ROCKS OVER 1" DIAMETER, AND ANY EXCESS CUT
MATERIAL SHALL BE REMOVED BY THE CONTRACTOR AND PLACED IN
PROPER SITE AS DIRECTED BY OWNER.
5. CONCRETE WORK
5.1 GENERAL: PERFORM ALL WORK IN ACCORD WITH THE BEST STANDARD
PRACTICE. DO NOT WILLFULLY INSTALL WORK WHEN THERE IS AN
APPARENT CONFLICT.
5.2 AGGREGATE BASE: COMPACT TO A HARD, FIRM, UNYIELDING SURFACE
THAT WILL REMAIN STABLE WHEN SATURATED WITH WATER.
5.3 PREPARATION:
A. BASE COURSE: SUBGRADE SHALL BE SMOOTH, TRUE TO LINE AND
GRADE, AND TESTED FOR REQUIRED COMPACTION PRIOR TO START
OF PLACING CONCRETE. DAMPEN SUBGRADE 24 HOURS BEFORE
PLACING. RE -ROLL AS REQUIRED. WET FORMS TO TIGHTEN
CRACKS.
B. REINFORCING STEEL: BEFORE PLACING, THOROUGHLY CLEAN,
REINFORCING OF LOOSE'MILL SCALE, RUST, OIL OR OTHER
COATING THAT MIGHT DESTROY OR REDUCE BOND. POSITION AS
INDICATED, SECURE STEEL AGAINST DISPLACEMENT. USE
CONCRETE BLOCKS TO HOLD REINFORCEMENT IN PROPER
POSITION.
C. FOOTING: STAKE RIGIDLY AT 4 FEET O.C. AND SECURE
AGAINST DISPLACEMENT. INSTALL STRETCHED WIRES OR OTHER
DEVICES TO AVOID DISPLACEMENT. FORMWORK SHALL NOT
DEVIATE MORE THAN 1/8" FROM REQUIRED POSITIONS AND
LEVELS.
D. FOOTINGS: FOOTINGS FOR MASONRY WALLS SHALL BE DUG TO
DEPTH AND WIDTH AS DETAILED IN THE PLANS HAVING VERTICAL
SLIDES AND FLAT BOTTOM.
5.4 PLACING CONCRETE: PLACE CONCRETE WITHIN 60 MINUTES AFTER
MIXING. CONSOLIDATE BY VIBRATING AND/OR TAMPING.
5.5 CONTROL JOINTS: SHALL CONFROM TO CITY OF FONTANA STANDARD DETAIL

SURFACE. MAINTAIN CURING MEDIUM IN PROPER SEALED CONDITION
FOR A MINIMUM OF TEN DAYS KEEP TRAFFIC ON CURING SURFACE TO
THE MINIMUM POSSIBLE. IMMEDIATELY REPAIR ANY DAMAGE.
5.9 GUARANTEE: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL GUARANTEE THAT ALL CONCRETE
