RE: Paleontological Resources Records Search Results for the 14970 Jurupa Avenue Project,
APNs 0237-122-07 and 0237-121-03, Fontana, San Bernardino County, California
Dear Ms. Jaffan:
At the request of EPD Solutions, Inc., BFSA Environmental Services, a Perennial
Company (BFSA), has prepared this paleontological resource records search for the 14970 Jurupa
Avenue Project, located at 14970 Jurupa Avenue (Assessor’s Parcel Numbers 0237-122-07 and
0237-121-03) in the city of Fontana, California. This records search encompasses data within a
one-mile radius around the project, utilizing paleontological locality data from the San Bernardino
County Museum (SBCM) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History (LACM).
The results of the records search identified one previously recorded resource within one
mile of the subject property. The closest fossil locality is a partial skull of Smilodon, the saber-
toothed cat, located south of (or below) Jurupa Avenue approximately between Live Oak Avenue
and Catawba Avenue at a depth of approximately five feet (SBCM locality [loc.] 5.1.11; Reynolds,
in Aron et al. 2018; Cortez 2021). This places the proximity of the locality as close as a few tens
of feet, to as much as a mile going east. Seven localities (SBCM locs. 5.1.14 to 5.1.17 and 5.1.19
to 5.1.21) are situated about a mile and a half west project. The bones of large and small
Pleistocene-age mammals as well as terrestrial snails and freshwater clams were recovered from
these localities, mostly from clayey, silty sands from depths ranging from five to 21 feet below the
surface, when recorded. Mammals from these localities include three species of rodent, cottontail
rabbit, bison, western camel, horse, Pacific mastodon, and other unidentified large mammal
remains. The nearest LACM-based fossil locality is about seven miles to the southwest in Eastvale
(LACM loc. 7811) and consists of the bones of a Pleistocene snake (Bell 2024).
Based on the presence of nearby fossil localities at shallow depths and City of Fontana
guidelines regarding the preservation of paleontological resources (City of Fontana 2018a, 2018b),
paleontological monitoring is recommended for this project.
